The micrometer is a measuring instrument for measuring objects with a resolution of 0.01 mm. The essential part of the micrometer is a precisely made micrometer screw with a pitch of 0.5 mm and a range of 25 mm or 50 mm.

The micrometer measurement is based on the use of a micrometer screw and vernier. The micrometer screw is very precisely made. It has a thread pitch of 0.5 mm and is connected to the micrometer drum on the perimeter of which the vernier scale is engraved. The knob ensuring adequate, constant pressure of the jaws is connected to the micrometer drum via a ratchet clutch. Inadequate pressure causes considerable inaccuracy of measurement.

The micrometer jaws are:

• hammer - a fixed jaw that is part of the bow,
• spindle - movable jaw being an extension of micrometer screws.
